Art imitating reality? Girl thinks Animal Crossing villagers hate her but they’re just indifferent

The human mind is capable of personifying just about anything. From pet rocks to Annoying Orange, our ability as a species to impart traits on inanimate objects because we’re desperate for attention has never failed to impress. Take sophomore Sadie Deperro, who has recently become convinced that everyone on her Animal Crossing island hates her.

Deperro, who has a history of projecting personal insecurities into what would normally be low-stress activities, downloaded the game earlier this summer and quickly fell in love with life in the idyllic digital world far from any form of societal pressure. This soon changed as more and more villagers moved in and Deperro began to feel left out of activities like standing in the town square for a couple hours or walking by the river with a fishing rod. “Is Nook even my friend or is he just nice to me because I’m the only one on the island who spends money? The other day I gave my neighbor this really cute blouse I designed and she gave me a vacuum cleaner in return, and I’m not sure if she was just trying to get rid of it or if she thinks my house is too dirty,” Deperro stated in a Facebook post that no one is sure whether to respond to.

We reached out to the villagers for comment, but because they are a virtual interface meant to be but a facsimile of life on Earth we were unable to get a response. We at the Spoke can only imagine they would have said something along the lines of “Meepo noona wee wee? Ah, nuby nino na wono.” Translation: “Oh her? Yeah she seems like she’s got a lot going on, but I don’t have any reason to dislike her since I am a computer program and therefore incapable of feeling.”

When asked about her plans for the future, Deperro commented, “I really want to check in on Webkinz again for old times’ sake, but I’m afraid it’ll be way too awkward to see Sparkles and the others since I haven’t fed them in like, ten years…”
