Couple diagnosed with concussions after attempting to hookup in lofted beds

The infamously low ceilings in Emory’s freshman dorms caused quite the headache for one couple last weekend. On Saturday night, first-years Emily Starr and Dylan Wright met at Maggie’s, the popular neighborhood bar frequented by Emory students. After a few hours spent pressed up against each other (less by choice and more by lack of room to move) and yelling small talk at each other over the music, the two decided it was time to leave together. They stumbled into an uber and eventually ended up in Starr’s room in Dobbs, “He has a room in Raoul, where the bed is on the ground, but when I asked if we could go there, he said his roommate was up playing Fortnite and wouldn’t want to be disturbed, so we went back to my place instead,” said Starr.

The couple began to hookup. With Starr beginning on top, the night seemed to be going according to plan, until she sat up to remove a piece of clothing too quickly, causing her to forcibly hit her head on the ceiling. “I had never come close to hitting my head before, but I guess that’s because I never had the extra couple of inches that come from sitting directly on top of someone,” recalled Starr. “So when I went to take off my shirt, I completely smashed my head against the ceiling tiles. I actually started to feel really dizzy, but I’m no quitter, so I just asked him to switch positions and kept going.” The two resumed, however after just a few minutes, Wright’s phone began to ring and as he sat up to silence it, he too hit his head on the ceiling with even more force than Starr had just moments before. The couple decided it was time to call it quits. The next day Wright received a text message; iit read “Hey I just got back from the doctor, and I have a concussion. You may want to get yourself checked.” Wright immediately went to student health services, where he too was diagnosed with a concussion. The pair hopes that future couples can learn from their accident and that nobody else will have to suffer in the same way.
