Rejected Spring 2022 Courses Leak in Yet Another College Fuck-Up

In a fuck-up comparable only to the Great Reply-All E-mail Chain of 2019, the College of Arts and Sciences mistakenly e-mailed a list of courses that were not approved for instruction for the Spring 2022 semester to the entire undergraduate population. While the mistake had few negative ramifications aside from the student body’s annoyance at receiving yet another e-mail from Emory, some undergraduate students lamented the rejection of courses in their areas of interest. “Some of them actually seem okay,” commented one student, while another noted that “most of the classes on here still seem harder than SOC101.”

Below, we list a few of the standout courses from the list of flops. A pdf of the e-mail in its entirety is available here.

1AMST396/SOC375 (cross-listed) – Trucking, Fucking and Cranking That Hog

*Note: the professor for this course wanted seats reserved for students who believe that Wild Hogs (2007) deserved a best picture Oscar.

FILM310 – Movies That are Only Like 30% Worse Than the Social Network

Required viewings were to include Trial of the Chicago 7, Moneyball, and Boss Baby 2: Family Business

WGS345W – Speculating Queerness in Pop Culture

An excerpt from the course syllabus reads: “This course seeks to create discourse around the question: is this celebrity queer or are they just queerbaiting to drive us insane? Did Taylor Swift actually date Karlie Kloss? Is Harry Styles just playing us? Jesus Christ already, just tell us. This is not the 80s and you are not Rock Hudson. Lots of people are openly queer in Hollywood now! We’re dying here. Just tell us. Just TELL US.”

The course fulfills the Continued Writing requirement for its final assignment: An original queer fanfiction piece about any actor, singer or fictional character.

MUS400 – Canceled Artists Symposium

A leaked syllabus for this course revealed an entire unit devoted to Azealia Banks, as well as a Close Reading assignment on the text fight between Banks Grimes in which Banks alleged that Grimes “smell[s] like a roll of nickels.”

POLS410 – Navigating Leftist Twitter

A course that helps leftists focus their political messaging on the important things: tearing down other leftists over minutiae. What did Marx really mean in that one paragraph excerpt from his 2200 page book? No need for collective action when you can get in a days-long twitter fight with your classmates!

WGS210 – Intro to Girlbossing

The lack of adequate prerequisite material on Introductory Gaslighting and Introductory Gatekeeping led to the rejection of this course, which College administrators thought would be too difficult on its own.

When asked why these courses did not make the cut, a spokesperson for Emory College responded “We don’t have the resources to run every single course a professor submits an idea for, so we just picked the ones that would get the chop out of a hat. These courses just happened to be the unlucky ones. Except for Intro to Girlbossing – we simply do not have the necessary expertise to run that at the moment, but we’re in talks with Kelly Loeffler about it for Fall 2022.”
