Black History Month is a time for the uplifting of Black spirits as well as reflection for the dark past Black Americans have experienced. In honor of February, we decided to go back to review some of the hardest moments in Emory’s history to be a Black person. We did not have to go far. Last month during a beautiful snow day, some white people (derogatory) decided to write the n-word in snow. Looks like somebody had a white Christmas! We, the Black writer of the Spoke, decided to put together this guide to help you aspiring anti-racists spot the racists in your company. Here are some signs it was your, yes, your boyfriend that did a hate crime.
- He has not yet fulfilled his race/ethn gen ed requirement. Ummmm… aren’t you a little curious about cultures other than your own?
- He knows the difference between Roman and N*zi salute. Ummmm… okay, buddy.
- The only Black artist on his Spotify Wrapped was Kanye West. Ummmm… interesting choice.
- His favorite TV show Family Guy because the humor is super edgy. Ummmm… sure, dude.
- Wears camo but not in a gay way. Ummmm… boo.
- He boo’d Taylor Swift at the Super Bowl and rooted for the Chiefs. Ummmm… baby now we’ve got bad blood. Also, um, you’re a loser.
- He didn’t really get why they couldn’t have given a “real country artist” the Grammy for Best Country Album. Ummmm… someone needs to raise their ya ya.
- Favorite movie is Emilia Perez because of the controversy. Ummmm… I’d like to know about brain change operation. (Bonus: he likes Marvel movies. The simple minded can be convinced racism is the way.)
