While we may be Emory’s largest comedy publication, we wanted to discuss something more sinister and scary for once. No, it’s not the rejected writer applications; it’s director, writer, and producer Ryan Coogler’s new period supernatural horror film coming to theaters this April 18th, Sinners.
Sinners, set in 1930s Jim Crow era Mississippi, follows two twin brothers returning to their hometown attempting to ditch their troubled pasts. They establish a juke joint and delve into the vibrant blues scene of the era, until their aspirations of a fresh start are ruined by an evil force that threatens their community
Now, if you scare easily (as I do), don’t worry. You can just stare at lead actor Michael B. Jordan the whole time and get carried away (also as I do). What’s better than Michael B. Jordan playing one character? That’s exactly right: Michael B. Jordan playing TWO characters. I haven’t been this hard during a vampire movie since Nosferatu! Reminiscent of Jim Carrey in Sonic 3 (if you have younger siblings), or Mike Myers in Austin Powers (if you have cool parents), or Ezra Miller in The Flash (if you’re one of those people), Michael B. Jordan plays the dual role of twin brothers Elijah and Elias. For a movie set over 80 years ago in the south, what force is more evil than systemic racism? Well none other than vampires from the Klu Klux Klan. Which, come to think of it, is still kind of systemic racism, but with slightly more blood curses than the real KKK. And no, this isn’t a Morbius sequel. If anything, it’s an Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter sequel.
Leading the Klu Klux Klan and acting as the main antagonist is Remmick, played by Jack O’ Connell. The narrative choice to add a vampiric nature to the KKK serves to amplify the real life horror and atrocities of the KKK and their insidious influence during that time in history. Hailee Steinfeld— known for her roles in Pitch Perfect 2, Into the Spiderverse, Arcane, Dickinson, and for writing a song about masturbating that one time— portrays the character of Mary, a biracial woman who shares a deep and complicated history with one of the brothers. From the trailers, we can see that Mary also becomes a vampire, albeit under different circumstances and reasons than the KKK, adding nuance and depth to her character and relation to the brothers. Lemme tell ya, I haven’t seen a white woman this scary since I had a lemonade stand without proper permits!
In all, you can expect jazz, jugulars, and jumpscares in this action packed, star-studded film. That new Blade movie ain’t happening anytime soon, so be sure to grab your film and history major friends (because let’s be real, they’re not going to be busy partying or anything) and get your tickets today for Sinners, in theaters April 18th!
