After witnessing an alarming number of first years breaking down into tears at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, four disgruntled students are saying “no more.” These students plan to share their own traumatizing airport security experiences and will offer tips and tricks to first years who haven’t yet popped their Atlanta airport cherry.
One of the student founders, Danny Delta, recounts his first time in Hartsfield-Jackson during his freshman fall break: “My shoes were off. My belt was gone. I was humped by the drug dog, and I still got a pat down.” Needless to say, his TSA experience was more than a little violating and left him anxious about his upcoming winter break trip.
Co-club founder Fred Frontier was more frightened by the TSA agent manning the airport baggage scanners. The sophomore said, “She told me to take my laptop out, but my bag was packed so tightly that it took me about ten seconds. The TSA worker then yelled that I was wasting everyone’s time and said I was a disappointment to the entire state of Georgia.”
The seminar isn’t only for freshmen; junior Susan Spirit was eager to sign up. Spirit has dealt with a more emotional abuse from TSA. “The agent held up my Driver’s License next to my face and said, ‘This doesn’t look like you.’ The photo was only taken a month ago; I just wasn’t wearing any makeup because my flight was at 7 a.m.”
Another attendee – who asked to remain anonymous – briefly shared with the Spoke perhaps the most horrifying experience yet. He recalled how he was so new to flying that he walked through the metal detector while still wearing his jacket, belt, and shoes. He refused to comment further on account of being unable to relive the trauma, but the viral video we found of a college student having a full melt down at the metal detectors says enough.
During the workshop, the students will go over worst-case scenarios (What do you do if your suitcase gets pushed to the side and you have to watch the TSA rifle through it?), various physical drills (pulling your liquids in and out of your backpack while being timed) and taken through apparel dos-and-don’ts (yoga pants, yes; cargo pants, no).
Learn how to do airport security like a pro and escape the TSA without tears. You might even get an approving nod from the TSA agent when they see your laptop is in a separate bin.
Registration for this five hour long seminar can be found on the CORQ app for a small fee of $65.
