Historically, the Kappa Alpha Order is known to be, as many would say, made up of a bunch of racists. These accusations are only solidified by the fact that the organization’s spiritual founder is none other than the Confederate General himself, Robert E. Lee. While many chapters of KA around the country do not fight this fact and rather embrace their spiritual founder as a gentleman and a hero in the War of Northern Aggression, Emory’s own chapter of KA has been known to keep these parts of the KA lifestyle in the shadows. Although the Emory KA house used to display a portrait of Robert E. Lee in their on-campus house, a few years ago they took it down and threw it in the attic as they try their best to take the valiant and courageous stance that racism is wrong.
Despite this, there remain to be whispers of the KA chapter of Emory still showing allegiance to their racist heritage by showing loyalty to their spiritual founder. To this, KA says enough. Many Kappa Alphas at Emory wish to launch their brotherhood into the 21st Century while still being able to hang their beloved portrait of Robert E. Lee. Therefore, they have commissioned the repainting of the notorious portrait of Robert E. Lee to make it more “politically correct”, and The Spoke has the inside scoop.
In an exclusive interview, the artist Duke David explains that “The painting is meant to change not only the image of KA but of Robert E. Lee as a friend to minorities.” In a sneak peak of the ongoing project, one can see an illustration of a vigorous game of Beer Die occurring in which Robert E. Lee, dressed in classic fraternity garb (and a septum piercing), is playing against Maya Angelou and Stacey Abrams.” We want him to seem like a bro for the bros but also a bro for some pretty cool women” says KA member Wyatt Pravalige (23B). At the moment, Lee does not appear to have a “die partner”, but the artist told us that the intention is to make famous gay artist Lil Nas X, Lee’s beer die teammate. Although some brothers are showing apprehension towards this addition.
“Make sure that we are not making it look like Robert E. Lee was a f***** or anything like that. And even if he were, he would be the one doing the fucking.” says Haight Cryme (22B) another KA brother advising the artist.
There is no word on when the portrait will be available for public viewing, but the brothers of Kappa Alpha are hoping to have the new and improved portrait ready for grand unveiling during Run the Row for the new pledges. It is unclear whether Housing has approved this repainting and hanging of the new portrait, but there is no question that Emory’s chapter of Kappa Alpha will join the brothers of Alpha Tau Omega as Fox News clickbait.
